St Aidan's Walking Group

The group was started in 1999 with several aims in mind. Essentially the walks are intended to be social occasions whilst, at the same time, we hope to enjoy a little exercise. In order not to impose too much on members’ valuable time (particularly those still in employment for most of the week!), and in order not to overstretch ourselves, the walks are of about 7-8 miles in length. They are usually held on the first Saturday of the month and, by making an early start, we generally complete the walks by about 1- 2 p.m. thereby leaving the rest of the day available for other things. We have, of course, gone beyond this time on various occasions , particularly when the walk has been some distance from Rochdale.

In addition to several circular walks we have, in stages , completed the Rochdale Way, the Pendle Way , The Two Roses Way and the relatively easy walk of the Rochdale Canal from Sowerby Bridge to Manchester. The “Two Roses Way” 100 mile circular from Whalley to Skipton has been our most challenging and varied expedition.

Whilst the group originally consisted entirely of church members, it is now open to friends from outside church. New members are welcome at any time. We are a friendly lot of a wide age range, more amblers than ramblers, walking to enjoy the companionship. We do not aim at anything arduous but boots and good weatherproof clothing are advisable. .
